Spartans Place 15th At NCAA Championships

LOUISVILLE, Ky. – The University of Tampa women’s cross country team braved the cold, snowy conditions to finish No. 15 at the 2010 NCAA Division II Cross Country Championships on Saturday at E.P. “Tom” Sawyer State Park.

Heather Nicolosi led the Spartans with a 34th place finish. The junior from Seminole, Fla., became an All-American after finishing with a time of 22:14 in the women’s 6K.

Lindsay Edwards (66th, 22:52.1), Kelly Hagan (124th, 23:53.6), Kaia Hampton (131st, 23:58.7), Katie O’Brien (139th, 24:14), Iolani Scanlon (169th, 25:08.4) and Chanelle Cox (171st, 25:14.7) were also part of UT’s championship competition contingent.

Tony Nicolosi also competed as an individual in the men’s championship, finishing 95th in the 10K. Nicolosi posted a 32:40.9 showing for the Spartans.

NEW ORLEANS – The U.S. Track & Field and Cross Country Coaches Association (USTFCCCA) recognized nearly 240 athletes that earned All-Region awards for cross country in Division II following this weekend’s NCAA Regional Championships. The University of Tampa had six on the list, including four females and two males.

Athletes of member schools that finished in the top 15 individually at one of the eight regional sites earned the honor. Chanelle Cox, Lindsay Edwards, Kaia Hampton and South Region champion Heather Nicolosi represented the UT women and Tony Nicolosi and Charles Toledo were listed for the Spartan men.

The USTFCCCA will release the final regular-season national coaches’ poll of the season in Division II in the coming days. In addition, regional athletes and coaches of the year will be named on Wednesday.


The Spartan women will compete at the NCAA Championships on Saturday, Dec. 4 in Louisville, Ky. Tony Nicolosi will also represent the Tampa men as he earned a spot following his third place finish at the regional.

NEW ORLEANS – The U.S. Track & Field and Cross Country Coaches Association (USTFCCCA) recognized nearly 240 athletes that earned All-Region awards for cross country in Division II following this weekend’s NCAA Regional Championships. Athletes of member schools that finished in the top 15 individually at one of the eight regional sites earned the honor.

Adams State’s men led the nation with seven runners earning All-Region honors. Grand Valley State’s men followed with six.

On the women’s side, Grand Valley State bested the field with six honorees, followed by Chico State, Adams State, Shippensburg, and Stonehill which had five apiece.

In the conference race, the PSAC notched 14 men and 15 women All-Region recipients to lead all other leagues in the category. The RMAC was second on the men’s side with 13 on the list while the Northeast-10 was the runners-up on both men’s and women’s list with 13.

Bellarmine will host the NCAA Division II Cross Country Championships, December 4, at E.P. “Tom” Sawyer State Park in Louisville, Ky.

Spartan Women Run To Another First Place Finish

SEPTEMBER 17, 2010 - Women's Track & Field

MELBOURNE, Fla. – After winning the Early Bird Classic to begin the season, the No. 10 University of Tampa women’s cross country team picked up another first-place finish at the Florida Tech Invite. The Spartan men also competed, finishing second at Wickham Park.

In the women’s race, UT held off fellow Sunshine State Conference foes Nova Southeastern and Florida Tech to claim the title. Embry-Riddle edged the Spartans in the men’s race as UT finished ahead of notable opponents Nova Southeastern, Florida Tech and Saint Leo.

Heather Nicolosi finished second in the women’s 5K as teammate Kaia Hampton was fourth. Lindsay Edwards and Kelly Hagan turned in top-10 showings, crossing sixth and ninth respectively. Chanelle Cox was 11th as Dana Glodek (15) and Katie O’Brien (18) all earned top-20 achievement.

Charles Toledo was UT’s top male finisher in the 8K, crossing third among all competitors. Kevin Lane and Bryan Garcia finished seventh and eighth respectively as Lewis Price (12) and Tory Webb (15) rounded out the Spartan scorers.

Tampa returns to the trails on Friday at the annual Florida Invite in Gainesville. The race is slated for 8 a.m.
