NICEVILLE — For seven of Niceville’s student athletes, the world is about to get bigger, and the lights brighter.

Nic Nolan, Chance Huff, Ciara Coger, Lauren Miller, Katelynn Inness, Sydney Byrd and Bayley McMenimen each signed letters of intent to play their respective sports at the collegiate level Wednesday in the Niceville auditorium.

Each took a turn behind the table, draped with Niceville banners and a bronze eagle statue, set up at center stage. Friends, family and teammates looked on, beaming with pride, as the signees thanked those who helped them on their journeys.

Three will be students at Power Five schools come August. Huff signed to play baseball with Vanderbilt. Miller heads to Mississippi State to join the Bulldogs golf team. McMenimen joins the nationally-ranked Minnesota volleyball team.

Three more will stay in Florida to pursue his or her dreams. Nolan signed to play baseball at Florida Gulf Coast University. Inness will play softball for North Florida, and her teammate Byrd will stay close to home, signing with Northwest Florida State.

Coger will run cross country and track at Davidson in North Carolina.

“You can tell by their speeches just the quality of not only athletes we have, but people,” Niceville Athletic Director John Hicks said. “Everybody did a great job.”

Ciara Coger:

How does it feel signing with Davidson?

It feels surreal. I’m very, very happy that I get to go to the next level. It’s a special thing. The school’s good academically and athletically and they do emphasize both, so I feel honored the chose me both academically and athletically.

What are you most excited about next fall?

I’m excited for the weather and the new coaching system. North Carolina is so beautiful and it’s known for its cross country, so I’m very excited for that.
