BIRMINGHAM, Ala. – University of South Alabama senior Lindsay Schwartz scored 3,835 points in the women’s indoor pentathlon to earn her first victory of the season on the opening day of competition at the Birmingham Ice Breaker on Wednesday at the Birmingham Crossplex.

Schwartz’s score sets a new school record and also places her atop the current national indoor pentathlon rankings.

Out of the five events, Schwartz won the high jump on a mark of 1.67m, good enough for 818 points, and the 800-meter run (2:22.73, 787 pts.). She placed second in the long jump (5.63m, 738 pts.) and 60-meter hurdles (8.90s, 931 pts.), and threw for a mark of 10.48m in the shot put, earning her third place and 561 points.

Said USA head track and field coach Paul Brueske, “Lindsay is a tremendous competitor. She deserves to be mentioned among the top student-athletes in the nation right now.”

Leah Hixon also bested her previous fifth-place all-time mark by three points on Wednesday, totaling 3,236 points. Jasmine Ferguson finished eighth with 2,920.

Adam Patterson and Coastal Carolina transfer Charlie Tidwell also etched their names into school history on Wednesday. Patterson led four Jaguars into the top eight of the men’s weight throw, reaching a mark of 16.66m, which moved him up to third all-time in the indoor event. Tidwell’s first meet in a Jag uniform culminated in the form of a fourth-place all-time record, after he tossed for a 16.42m mark to finish fifth...

MOBILE, Ala. – University of South Alabama head track and field coach Paul Brueske announced on Monday his seventh track and field signee for the 2011-12 seasons.

Charlie Tidwell joins the Jags as a transfer from Coastal Carolina, where he earned all-Big South Conference honors in the hammer throw with a personal-best mark of 58.78m (192-10.50) at the league’s 2011 outdoor track and field championships. He was also a top-eight finisher in the competition’s discus throw, an event in which he boasts a personal-best mark of 45.71m (149-11).

“Charlie is a high-caliber athlete who showed his ability as a freshman at Coastal Carolina,” Brueske said. “He will join an already talented group of throwers; we expect to be very competitive on the conference and national level in those events.”

Last spring, the Jaguar men’s and women’s teams finished fourth and sixth, respectively, at the Sun Belt Conference Outdoor Track and Field Championships.

CONWAY - The Coastal Carolina men's track & field team swept the throws at the Chanticleer Classic on Friday afternoon at the Coastal Carolina Track & Field Complex.

Freshman Charlie Tidwell completed the trifecta as he won the discus, hammer throw and shot put. Tidwell led off the afternoon with a 44.35m (145-06) throw in the discus to win the event by two feet. He then threw for 58.18m (190-10) in the hammer and capped his day with a persona-best 14.80m (48-06.75) in the shot.

Tyler Swanson and Cameron Griggs also turned in solid days for the Chanticleers as each placed in the top six of both the hammer and shot put. Swanson placed fourth in the hammer with a heave of 47.59m (156-02) as Griggs finished sixth with a distance of 43.30m (412-01). The shot put saw Griggs place second with a personal-best put of 14.65m (48-00.75) while Swanson completed the podium sweep for the Chants with a throw of 13.28m (43-07.00).

Tyler Slapikas, a freshman, claimed his first collegiate event win with an impressive distance of 52.96m (173-09) in the javelin. Slapikas' throw was a full five meets better than his closest competitor.

In the track events, Kyle Kling finished second in the 1,500 meters with a time of 3:58.26 a mere .04 second behind winner Pardon Ndhlovu of UNC-Pembroke. Cameron Wells was third in the event crossing the finish line in 4:04.64 followed by Rob Delviscio in sixth with a 4:13.31.

In the 3,000 meter steeplechase, Spencer Lange placed second with a 10:42.63 while Andre Enoch finished third in 11:00.08.

Prior to the track events getting underway, Coastal Carolina honored its seniors for their accomplishments and contributions to Chanticleer track & field.

Up next, the Chanticleers will travel to Lexington, Va. to compete in the 2011 Men's Big South Outdoor Tack & Field Championship. The meet will begin on Thursday, April 21 and conclude on Saturday, April 23.

AUBURN, Ala. – The Coastal Carolina men’s track & field team finished the Auburn University Tiger Track Classic with nine top 10 finishes.

The meet, held at Hutsell-Rosen Track, featured athletes from 18 universities from across the southeastern United States.

Three Chanticleers finished in the top 10 of the 100 meters as Chris Lawson and Lenny Steed led the way with identical times of 10.69 to tie for eighth. Corey Jameson was right on their heels finishing the event a mere hundredth of second behind with a time of 10.70 to place tenth...

The Chanticleers also posted a strong showing in the jumps as three individuals placed in the top 10 of their respective events. Leading the way was Nehemiah Shelly ‘s triple jump of 14.28m (46-10.25) to place fifth in the event. Burton Jones finished within a meter of Shelly with a leap of 13.64m (44-9.0) to finish tenth. Freshman Raheen Frederick placed 13th in the long jump with a distance of 6.70m (21-11.75).

Three Coastal Carolina throwers turned in quality finishes at the Classic. Charlie Tidwell, Coastal’s top finisher in the meet, placed second in the hammer with a throw of 56.01m (183-09). Jason Flanagan, who entered the meet ranked 20th in the NCAA in the javelin, nearly equaled his season best mark with a throw of 66.41m (217-10) to place third in the event. Chris Tillotson, a sophomore, finished ninth overall in the javelin with a toss of 57.13m (187-5).

Next, the Chanticleers will send athletes to both the Duke Invitational and Florida State Seminole Invitational on April 8-9.

MYRTLE BEACH, S.C. - The Coastal Carolina men's and women's track & field teams turned in strong performances in the second day of the CCU/Shamrock held at Myrtle Beach High School's Doug Shaw Stadium...

On the men's side, head coach Jeff Jacobs had two individuals advance to the finals of the 110 meter hurdles. Shane Norris led the charge with a time of 15.06 while Russel Kanner was just behind turning in a time of 15.27.

The Chanticleers' 4x200m relay team of Chris Lawson, Ryan Edlich, Lenny Steed and Raheen Frederick placed seventh as they crossed the finish line in 1:27.15. The G.W. Express/Nike club team that featured Olympian Bershawn Jackson running the anchor leg won the event.

The men continued to impress in the field events during the meet as the Chants finished the day with four top six finishes. Charlie Tidwell was the top collegiate finisher in the hammer with a distance of 58.79m (192-10). Jason Flanagan finished fourth in the javelin as he threw for 62.31m (204-05).

Raheen Frederick placed sixth in the long jump with a distance of 6.97m (22-10.5). Ryan Fill also picked up a sixth place finish of his own in the javelin as threw for 60.68m (199-01).

The Chanticleers will wrap up the CCU/Shamrock Invitational on Saturday, March 19. The day will start at 11am and conclude at roughly 5:30 pm.

CONWAY - Kyle Kling picked up a top finish in the 5,000m to lead the Coastal Carolina track & field teams in the final day of the annual Coastal Carolina Invitational.

Kling, who was Coastal's top finisher throughout the cross country season, won the 5,000m with a time of 14:57.47. Kling also won the 3,000m at the Battle of the Beaches at UNC Wilmington this season.

In the 3,000m, senior Ryan Caputo finished 11th with a time of 9:05.30 and Rob Delviscio crossed the finish line in 9:10.81.

Freshman Charlie Tidwell backed up his superb performance on day one with a sixth place finish in the discus with a throw of 150'00" (45.71m). Also competing in the discus were Tyler Swanson (136"2" / 41.50m) and Cameron Griggs (133'10" / 40.79m).

Senior Ross Graves turned in a sixth place finish in the high jump with clearing a height of 6'0.75" (1.85m).

The women's team was paced by two top four finishes in the discus by Anjulia Nicholson and Shantelle Patterson. Nicholson finished second with a distance of 137'08" (41.97m) while Patterson, who won the hammer throw on Friday, threw for 125'08" (38.30m) to place fourth....

CONWAY - Day one of the annual Coastal Carolina Invitational saw the Chanticleer track & field team tally three first place finishes in the 31 team field.

Leading the way on the men's side was Charlie Tidwell in the hammer throw. Tidwell, in his second meet as a collegian, threw for a personal best 192'11" (58.81m). The mark is the fifth best distance in the Chanticleer record books and would have qualified for the NCAA East Preliminary Round last season.

Jason Flanagan made his season debut with a distance of 218'0" in the javelin. The mark earned 2010 Big South Champion in javelin a second place finish. Also competing in the javelin were Cameron Griggs and Tyler Slapikas who tossed for distances of 156'2" (47.61m) and 154'5" (47.08m), respectively. Griggs also competed in the hammer finishing with a distance of 12'10" (39.58m).

Ryan Caputo turned in a time of 9:05.30 in the 3,000m to finish 11th. Also competing in the 3,000m was Rob Delviscio who fished in a personal best 9:10.81.

On the women's side, Shantelle Patterson turned in a first place performance in the hammer throw with a personal record of 165'1" (50.32m). Sophomore Anjulia Nicholson finished in the top 10 with a seventh place finish with a throw of 142'4" (43.39m)....

WILMINGTON, N.C. - The Coastal Carolina men's track & field team opened the season with a second place finish in the Battle of the Beaches held at UNC Wilmington's Greene Track & Field Complex.

The Chanticleers finished with 92 team points, but UNC Wilmington was able to take back the surfboard trophy as the Seahawks scored 113. The Citadel and Slippery Rock also competed in the meet.

In the field event the Chants claimed the top spot in three events. Senior Jacques Watson, an NCAA Regional Preliminary Round qualifier last season, won the high jump as he cleared 6'9.75" (2.08m). Sophomore Chris Tillotson won the javelin with a throw of 187'02" (57.04m) and freshman Charlie Tidwell won his first meet event as a collegian with a throw of 47'7.25" (14.51m) in the shot put. Tidwell also finished second in the hammer with a distance of 188'06" (57.45m) and fourth in the discus with a toss of 149'01" (45.45m) to finish out his superb day.

Rounding out Coastal's top performances in the field were Tyler Slapikas' second place javelin throw of 173'11" (53.02m) along with juniors Chad Phillips' and Burton Jones' leaps of 47'10" (14.58m) and 46"5.25" (14.15m) in the triple jump.

Coastal Carolina will return to action on March 11-12 at home as the Chanticleers host the Coastal Carolina University Invitational.

CLEMSON, S.C. - The Coastal Carolina men's track and field team finished with eight top 10 finishes at the Tiger Paw Invitational Saturday, Feb. 12. The Chanticleers placed in five track events and three field events at the meet.

Corey Jameson finished fourth with a time of 6.76 in the 60 meters while Chris Lawson and Tyler Askew followed with 6.84 and 6.88, respectively.

Lawson and Jameson also competed at the meet in the 200 meters, crossing the line in 11th and 12th, with times of 22.55 and 22.56, respectively.

Shane Norris finished ninth in the 300 meters with a time of 35.96 while Stevie Brunson crossed the line in 50.45 in the open 400 meters to place sixth. Evan Desaulniers finished seventh in the 500 meters in 1:07.46.

Burton Jones placed sixth in the high jump with a leap of 6'6.75" (2.00m) and second in the open triple jump totaling 46'6.25" (14.18m). Jones was followed by Nehemiah Shelley in the open triple jump, finishing eighth with a 45'6.5" (13.88m) mark.

Charlie Tidwell, in the open weight throw, finished third, throwing a distance of 56'0.5" (17.08m).

    CONWAY, S.C.- Coastal Carolina men’s cross country/track and field head coach Jeff Jacob has announced his 2010-11 signing class. This class will include 10 student-athletes that have excelled throughout their high school careers. The recruiting class will bring in great experience and expectations with them as each have performed on their respective sates regional or state championship stage.

Four of the signess won a total of five individual state titles during their senior year of 2010. Tyler Askew (Conyers Ga./Salem HS) won the 2010 Georgia HS AAAA state crown in the long jump with a leap of 24’ 0.5” on his last attempt in the competition. Cameron Griggs (Ruby S.C./Chesterfield HS) won the 2010 SCHSL A State titles in the shot put and discus. Griggs has posted the top throws for all divisions in South Carolina for the 2010 season with personal bests of 58’ 0” in the shot and 178’ 10” in the discus throw. Charlie Tidwell (Niceville Fla./Niceville HS) won the 2010 Florida State AAA HS championship in the shot put with a personal best throw of 56’ 0.75”, and was also the runner-up in the discus throw at 175’ 8”. Raheen Frederick (Allendale S.C./Fairfax HS) won the 2010 SCHSL A State 400m title in a time of 49.61. Frederick was also runner-up in the long jump and finished third in the triple jump to help lead Allendale Fairfax to the team A title.

“I’m very pleased with this year’s class,” said head coach Jeff Jacobs. “We have some real quality athletes joining the program who can make an impact as freshmen in our quest to win a Big South Championship next spring.”

The Chanticleers will embark on the 2010 cross country season at the South Carolina Gamecock Open on Friday, September 3.
