Niceville’s Burnett signs D-I scholarship
By TRAVIS DOWNEY

By his own admission, Niceville senior Robert Burnett never envisioned walking off the stage at graduation and into a Division I cross country scholar-ship.
“When I first started, I never really thought it would get me anywhere ,” Burnett said. “It was a sport I did for fun.
“ Now, it’s taking me to college.”
Burnett has signed a cross country scholarship with the University of South Carolina Upstate, becoming the third member of the Niceville cross country team to sign with the Spartans program. Last March,
then-seniors Christian Ritacco and Cameron Thomas signed with Upstate before going on to strong freshman debuts.
Burnett hopes to continue that trend.
“I feel I’ve got a lot of improvement I can make in this next year and these next four years,” Burnett said. “I’m looking forward to it. I don’t really know what to expect, so I’m going to go in there, see what I can do and then work off of that.”
Niceville track/cross country coach Sherman Eller, himself a USC Upstate alum who still holds the school’s all-time record in the 8K at 25:53.00, believes the Spartans will receive one of the more consistent performers he has had in recent years. Last track
season, Burnett was the Eagles’ most consistent runner in the No. 1 position, despite running with the knowledge that his season would be cut short due to a surgery planned to correct what he called a “bad overbite.”
“His head was in a different place,” Eller said. “His mind was weighing heavy because he had never had surgery before.”
Burnett has since had the procedure and still has a bit of numbness in his jaw after having pieces of bone cut out and replaced with screws. Still, with a D-I athletic scholarship in tow, Burnett is only looking forward.      There is a Nike running camp later this summer, then the eighthour drive to Spartanburg to begin life as a college student-athlete, a move that
will be made easier thanks to a pair of familiar faces in Ritacco and Thomas as well as some extended family that reside in nearby Columbia.
“It’s going to be nice to run with my old teammates again,” Burnett said. “It’s going to be nice to have some family that’s close by. I’ll be able to see them, so even though I’m moving away from my parents and everything, I’ll still be able to see my family.”

Niceville's Skarupa signs with McNeese State track
By TRAVIS DOWNEY

Niceville senior Cody Skarupa recently signed a track scholarship with McNeese State in Lake Charles, La., fulfilling a longtime goal of earning a Division I athletic scholarship.
But as he penned his name to scholarship papers, Skarupa also fulfilled a promise three years in the making.
In 2007, Skarupa’s mother, Fern, was first diagnosed with breast cancer, news that rocked the then-sophomore’s entire world and led him to make a bold proclamation in hopes of bringing what little bit of ease he could to a turbulent time.
“I made a promise to my mom and dad that I was going to get a full ride somewhere,” Skarupa recalled. “I know college is not a cheap date at all. (Watching my mom) go through chemotherapy and with all of the special treatments my mom was taking, we were racking up a huge medical bill.
“I didn’t want my parents to
worry about me.
”So, after talking with his summer coach and personal mentor Willie Parker and later meeting with Niceville track coach Sherman Eller, Skarupa decided to begin turning his attention toward the hurdle events, competing in the 400-meter hurdles during the summer months and then shifting to the 300-meter hurdles once the high school season began.
It was also during the summer that Skarupa turned in a time of 1:59.50 in the 800-meter run at an indoor meet that opened the eyes of several college coaches.
Everything appeared to be falling into place as Skarupa prepared for his senior year. But then, shortly after Christmas, Fern lost her battle with cancer and as the season drew closer Skarupa redoubled his efforts of landing an athletic scholarship.
“He channeled it,” Eller said.
At the Panhandle Champion-ships, Skarupa ran a school-record time of 39.93 in the 300 hurdles to win the event. From there, Skarupa went on to claim another victory in the 300 hurdles at the Okaloosa
County Championships at Crest-view before going on to finish third with a personal-record and a U.S. second-team elite time of 38.56 at the Meet of Champions in Mobile, Ala.
Skarupa went on to win district and regional titles before claiming a fifth-place finish in the Class 3A state meet that served as the exclamation point to what was a breakthrough year in more ways than one. McNeese State coach Brendon Gilroy, who first approached Skarupa following
that strong indoor showing, was quick to offer the Niceville senior that long sought-after scholarship. Following a weekend campus visit, Skarupa was ready to sign.
“It allowed me to fulfill my goal as a track athlete to continue running at the next level, but it also felt like I fulfilled a promise to my mom and dad,” Skarupa said.
Said Parker: “It’s almost like a storybook: You wouldn’t believe it unless you lived it. I’m just happy to be a part of it.”

inch in the shot put was even better than his state-title winning toss of 56-0.75. He finished runner-up in the discus at the Golden South after a throw of 168-9.
Niceville’s Cody Skarupa earned a top-five finish in the 400 hurdles, placing fourth in 53.60.

Charlie Tidwell, Matt Bevil and Rachael Klinger race their way titles, accolades
By TRAVIS DOWNEY

At least once a week, every week, Charlie Tidwell relived the most gut-wrenching ordeal of his young athletic career.
It happened at the 2009 Class 3A state track and field finals. There, having arrived at state as one of the top discus throwers, Tidwell fouled out of the event, stepping out of the circle on his first throw before watching each of his ensuing two attempts land outside of the sector.
“It hurt,” Tidwell recalled. “I had to walk away and not let people see how I really felt.”
Since that time, Tidwell made it a habit to relive that excruciating walk by watching tape of the event on his computer week after week, noting that “It pushed me.”
Just weeks ago, Tidwell was crowned a state champion in the shot put and a state runnerup in the discus after dominating those two events locally.
Similarly, Fort Walton Beach’s Matt Bevil re-wrote the record books and climbed up both state and national rankings in capturing a state crown in the 800-meter run as well as anchoring a pair of state runner-up relays, while on the girls’ side Niceville’s Rachael Klinger battled through a strained quad muscle to win three district titles and record three top five finishes at regionals and two top six finishes at state.
As a result, Tidwell, Bevil and Klinger have been named the All Sports Association/Daily News Track Athletes of the Year, respectively. Tidwell and Bevil share the award on the boys’ side.
Klinger’s dominance on the girls’ side was evident early on at the Max Bruner Invitational as the Eagles’ senior flexed her strength in multiple events by capturing first-place medals in the 100-meter hurdles, high jump, 300-meter hurdles and the 4x100-meter relay. Klinger matched the feat two weeks later at the Viking Relays.
Klinger went on to capture district titles in the high jump, 100 hurdles and 300 hurdles, and placed second at regionals in the high jump and third in the 100 hurdles before earning a runner-up finish in the high jump at state along with sixth place in the 100 hurdles. In the post-season, Klinger accumulated a whopping 56.75 points for Niceville in her individual events.
      “It was flawless,” Klinger

said of her senior season, which was capped by her signing a track scholarship to the University of South Florida.
Bevil, who recently signed a track scholarship with Brown University, also knows about flirting with perfection. Affec-tionately referred to as “The Beast” by teammates, the senior was instrumental in the Vikings’ boys team capturing its first regional title since 1992 as well as Okaloosa County’s first runner-up finish at the state meet.
“I think Matt, from the first day you met him, you just knew he was going to do big things,” Vikings coach Lissette Moller-Fields said.
Bevil knew no equal in the 800-meter run, capturing district and regional titles before taking the state championship with a time of 1:52.82. His prelim mark of 1:50.29 has Bevil currently ranked third nationally.
That speed served the Vikings’ 4x400 and 4x800
relays well, as Bevil anchored the two teams to two more district and regional titles before each finished second at state.
Moller-Fields said Bevil would also be remembered for oftentimes serving as an extra coach with up-andcoming athletes, talking with them before, during and after events to see how they were doing.
“That’s how I (learned),” Bevil said. “If it wasn’t for the coaches and the older guys that graduated a couple of years ago that helped me along, that pushed me along the way … you get the younger guys to try to beat you so that when they’re seniors they’re faster than you were when you were a senior and the team just grows.”
Growth played a key role in Tidwell’s senior season as well, whether it came from the personal growth gained in having to deal with past failures or the physical growth that came with a more dedicated
approach. “I think it showed a lot of maturity on Charlie’s part to come back from that adversity,” Niceville coach Sherman Eller said.
After capturing a district title and regional runner-up finish in the discus, Tidwell finished second at state in the event, firing off “the best throw in my life” of 175-08.
From there, he stepped off the podium and into the shot put competition. His first throw of 51 feet assured him of an appearance in the finals. Once there, Tidwell bested the field by nearly 4 full inches, throwing 56-0.75 to capture the title.
What followed was another moment caught on tape and relived with regularity.
“Just getting on the podium … I was trying not to cry,” said Tidwell, who will continue his track career at Coastal Carolina next fall. “I had to wipe my eyes a little. People still (see the tape) and point it out to me.”

Niceville's Klinger signs with South Florida track

NICEVILLE — The ink had not yet dried when Niceville senior Rachael Klinger looked to her left and felt her eyes begin to water.
Sitting quietly one table over was Fred Carley — the man who first introduced Klinger to the hurdles as an eighth-grader and had since inspired her to become a coach herself one day — and his eyes were also welling up with emotion just after she signed a track scholarship to the University of South Florida.
“When I was at Ruckel my eighth-grade year, first year of ever doing track, he pinpointed me out and said, ‘You look like you should be a hurdler,’ ” Klinger recalled. “He took the time to show an eighth-grader such a technical event. He knew the success would come.” Come it did, as Klinger, a District 2-3A champion in the 100-meter hurdles 300 hurdles and the high jump as
well as a state placer in the high jump (second) and the 100 hurdles (sixth), fulfilled a childhood dream by signing a Division-I track scholarship.
Klinger is one of 13 members of the Bulls’ 2010 signing class that features three state champions, one two-time state champion and two other state runner-ups. After visiting the Tampa campus — and taking in the newly renovated USF Soccer-Track and Field Stadium — and speaking closely with Bulls track coach Warren Bye, Klinger said choosing USF was easy.
“The first thing that stuck out is he was really serious about his program,” Klinger said. “I’m so blessed that he’s giving me the opportunity.”
Klinger will report to USF on June 23 to start her summer semester of classes and begin working out with her own personal trainer in preparation for her fresh-man season, where she is expected to compete in the heptathlon, an event she has never before

competed in.
But having run the 200 in middle school and competed regularly in the 100 hurdles and high jump — two of the highest-scoring events in the six-event heptathlon — both Klinger and Bye feel she has a good base upon which to build.
      Niceville track coach Sherman
Eller believes that despite all of the success and personal records Klinger set over the past few months, her brightest days remain in front of her.
“The improvement that I’ve seen and been a part of has been amazing,” Eller said. “But I think she still has a tremendous amount to grow. The sky’s the limit.”

Area athletes rack up at state track meet
From staff reports
Featuring only eight athletes on its roster, the Fort Walton Beach boys track team entered Friday’s Class 3A state meet with high hopes.
As it turned out, even their own lofty expectations couldn’t keep up.
Behind a state championship in the 800-meter run by Matt Bevil and a pair of second-place finishes in the 4x400 and 4x800-meter relays — each of which were anchored by Bevil — the Vikings tiny engine that could, did, as Fort Walton Beach finished as the state’s runner-up.
“We’re real excited,” Bevil said. “We were aiming for it, we weren’t expecting it but we were aiming for it. It was a big team effort but with a small team.”
Fort Walton Beach’s boys finished with 38 points, second to Charlotte’s 48.5. Niceville, which boasted a state champion of its own in shot put thrower Charlie Tidwell, finished eighth as a team.
Crestview’s Donquel Dorsey gave the area three state champions, winning the 400 meter dash with a time of 47.693, fulfilling what area coaches believed all
along to be a strong contingent of local athletes.
Fort Walton Beach received a big boost from it’s 4x800 meter relay team. One of the first events of the day, the foursome of Jake Dearmon, Luc Lawrence, Chris Douglas and Bevil finished second with a time of 7:50.73 and, according to Vikings coach Lissette Moller-Fields “set the tone” for the rest of the meet.
The Vikings’ 4x400-meter relay team of Bevil, Lawrence, Stephen Haye and Kevin Bryant later followed suit with a second second-place finish, this one coming in a time of 3:15.54. Haye also placed fifth in the 200-meter dash (21.82). Maurice Williams placed fourth in the triple jump (45-01) while Deiontrez Mount, who placed third in the preliminaries of the 110-meter hurdles, fell during the finals and did not finish.
“ We ’ r e o b v i o u s l y ecstatic,” Moller-Fields said.
In capturing the state title in the 400-meter dash, Dorsey became the first state champion Crestview athlete since 1996.
As Dorsey saw it, having already won the 400 at both the district and regional level, the Crestview standout might as well complete the trifecta by taking the crown at state, too.
“It feels real good to be a state champion,” Dorsey said. “I’ve trained really hard to get it. I told coach (Ernie Martin) I had to get a 47 to get it so I got a 47. It took a lean, but I got it.”
Teammate Aaron Nelson finished 12th in the 100-meter dash.
In the field events, Tidwell’s throw of 175-08 in the discus set a new personal and Niceville school record for the event, while teammate Cody Skarupa capped a strong season with a fifth-place finish in the 300-meter hurdles (37.92) to help the Niceville boys finish eighth (22) as a team.
“I can’t remember the last time we had a track state champion,” Eagles coach Sherman Eller said of Tidwell’s performance before speaking to the entire Niceville contingent. “We’re very pleased to take some high-quality athletes down there and represent Niceville well.”
Choctawhatchee also performed well, the day highlighted by Hakeem Tarpley’s fourth-place finish in the 800-meter run (1:53.73), an event which saw Fort Walton Beach’s Bevil (first) and Lawrence (sixth) provide an Okaloosa Countyladen podium.
On the girls’ side it was Pine Forest (92) taking the state crown with Niceville being the highest area finisher, coming in at 20th (10.75).
Niceville dynamo Rachael Klinger placed second in the high jump (5-04) and sixth in the 100-meter hurdles (14.91). Emily Sager finished seventh in the triple jump (36-09), securing herself a spot on the podium.

Holly Stanton led Fort Walton Beach with a fourthplace finish in the 3200 (11:18.99) and also placed 10th in the 1600 (5:20.07). Sarah deVaux, meanwhile, stepped onto the podium with an eighth-place finish in the 800-meter run (2:19.80).
Kiara Bryant finished 11th in the shot put for the Indians, while Navarre’s Chelsea Chandler placed fourth in the pole vault with a height of 11-00.

In a season that has witnessed personal-best and school-record times fall with seemingly each and every meet, seven members of the Fort Walton Beach track team — as well as a list of athletes from other area schools — will make the trip to Showalter Field at Winter Park High School for today’s Class 3A state meet, each hoping they have one more big meet in them.
“I think in the back of their head, as successful as they have been this season, they want to end the season on a high note,” Vikings coach Lissette Moller-Fields said.
“A s w e l l as they have trained this year and as much time as they have put into it, (they) just need to step to the line and not worry about anything but leaving it all out there and doing what they have worked so hard to do.”
Matt Bevil, who turned in a school
record time of 1:50.29 in winning the 800 meter run at last week’s regional meet, headlines a roster of local athletes looking to end the season as a state champion.
Bevil will also compete in the 4x400 relay with teammates Luc Lawrence, Kevin Bryant and Stephen Haye, a foursome that enters today’s meet seeded No. 1 for the event.
“They go into it knowing that people are going to have to take them down, not vice-versa,” said Moller-Fields, whose boys’ squad won the Region 1-3A title.
Lawrence will join Bevil in the 800, as will Choctawhatchee’s Hakeem Tarpley.
At the regional meet, Bevil, Tarpley and Lawrence finished first, second and third, respectively. Also competing for the Vikings’ boys are Maurice Williams (triple jump) as well as Chris Douglas and Jake Dearmon, who, along with Lawrence and Bevil, make up Fort Walton Beach’s 4x800 relay team. Deiontrez Mount, who last week won the 110 hurdles in a blazing 14.69, will also be on hand.
Crestview, meanwhile, will send three to state as Donquel Dorsey (400), Aaron Nelson (100) and Spencer Anderson (110 hurdles) each qualified with a strong showing at regionals, with Dorsey winning the 400.
“We’re running with the best of the best,” Crestview coach Ernie Martin said. “Our district and our regional meets prepared us well, just like we thought. To have three represent Crestview … I couldn’t have picked a better three.”
Niceville’s Cody Skarupa (300 hurdles) and Charlie Tidwell (shot put, discus) will each vie for state crowns today with the latter setting a schoolrecord in the shot put with a throw of 54-8 1/2.
On the girls’ side, Fort Walton Beach will send an area-best five athletes to Winter Park, with senior Holly Stanton looking to become the first Viking female to medal in three events at a state meet.
Stanton, who is part of the Vikings’ 4x800 meter relay, will also compete in the 1600 and 3200. She is seeded inside
the top eight in each event.
Iolani Scanlan, Jessie Niemiec and Sarah deVaux make up the remainder of the Vikings’ state-bound relay team. DeVaux will also compete individually in the 800, while Grace Fuller qualified for today’s meet in the pole vault.
Choctaw will send its 4x100 relay team of Brittany Brown, Jordan Miller, Lexi Landers and Alexis Goodwin to state coming off of a third-place finish at regionals, while Kiara Bryant will compete in the shot put for Choctaw.
“We’re very glad to be going to state,” Indians’ first-year coach Marshall Sealy said.
“We feel we have a great chance to get most of these kids on the podium. We won’t be satisfied with just going down there and showing up.”
Niceville’s Rachael Klinger will compete in both the 100 hurdles and the high jump, while team mate Emily Sager will compete in the triple jump. Chelsea Chandler of Navarre will look to build on her regional championship leap of 11 feet in the pole vault.

The postseason often brings surprises, but it didn’t for the Fort Walton Beach track teams in the District 2-3A meet.
As expected, the Viking boys captured the district championship, while the Viking girls placed second behind meet-host Tallahassee Chiles.
“We’re really pleased with a 1-2 finish leading into regionals,” Fort Walton Beach coach Lissette Moller-Fields said. “ … It highlighted how successful they’ve been this season.”
Fort Walton Beach’s boys gained 142 points to best Lincoln’s 109.
The Vikings got the top-four finish necessary to advance to regionals in 11 events. The 4x800 relay team of Jake Dearmon, Chris Douglas, Luc Lawrence and Matt Bevil set a new school record with its first-place finish in 7:52.
Bevil, Lawrence, Stephen Haye and Kevin Bryant also placed first (3:20) in the 4x400 relay. Haye, Bryant, Deiontrez Mount and Joe Lofton added a third place in the 4x100 relay.
“We were hoping for great perfor-mances from our relay teams, and they did just that,” Moller-Fields said.
Fort Walton Beach added four other first places. Bevil won the 800 meter run (1:55), Mount the 110 hurdles (15-09), Haye the 200 meter run (21.85) and Maurice Williams the triple jump.
Also securing regional berths were Josh Simmons in the discus (third) and high jump (fourth), Dearmon in the 1600 (third), and Andrew Kight (second) and Blair Troop (fourth) in the pole vault.
Chiles won the girls’ side with 182 points, Fort Walton Beach followed with 114, Niceville came in third with 101 and Choctawhatchee fourth with 87.
      Crestview was seventh with 36.
Fort Walton Beach’s girls, who advanced to regionals in nine events, were paced by Holly Stanton. She won the 3200 meter run (11:37), placed second in the 1600, fourth in the triple jump and teamed with Jessie Niemiec, Iolani Scanlan and Sarah deVaux for a first-place finish (9:54.61) in the 4x800 relay.
“Holly Stanton had just a huge day,” Moller-Fields said.
DeVaux and Scanlan placed second and third, respectively, in the 800 meter run, while Morgan McLaughlin finished second in the discus and third in the shot put. Grace Fuller was second in the pole vault, LeShairia Malone fourth in the shot put and Shakia Morris, Scanlan, Niemiec and deVaux placed second in the 4x400 relay.
Niceville’s girls earned a third-place finish fueled in large part by senior Rachel Klinger, who took home district titles in the 100 meter hurdles (14.94), the 300 meter hurdles (46.10) and the high jump (5-4).
Emily Sager won the triple jump (35-1) while also placing fourth in the 100 and 300 meter hurdles to give the Eagles a pair of female athletes that will compete in three different events at regionals.
Savannah Boswell (100 meter dash), Lauren Eschbach (800 meter run) and Sammy Zimmerman (triple jump) also advanced while Niceville’s 4x800 relay team of Eschbach, Laura Nelson, Marsel Mosley and Abby McCool, and its 4x100 relay team of Boswell, Tashi
Brown, Julianne Gaubron and Biannica Barksdale moved on.
On the boys’ side, Niceville received first-place finishes from Cody Skarupa (300 hurdles) and Charlie Tidwell, who threw the discus a school-record distance of 170-9 1/2. Tidwell also placed second in the shot put.
Bobby Kressin won the high jump (6-2) and also qualified in the 300 hurdles where he finished third.
Niceville’s 4x400 relay team, running without an injured Kody Williams, still managed to qualify for regionals as Skarupa, Kressin, Hansen and freshman McKinley Stephens placed third.
Niceville’s boys placed fifth as a team.
“We had some nice surprises,” Eagles coach Sherman Eller said. “With the weather and all of the delays, for the kids to go out there and be patient and compete was unbelievable.”

The District 2-3A meet results still hadn’t been posted on the FHSAA website as of the Daily News’ press time. Crestview and Choctawhatchee coaches couldn’t be reached for their teams’ results by deadline.

Area big schools brace for district track meets

Boasting a boys and girls team that are each ranked inside the state’s top 10 in Class 3A, one could forgive members of the Fort Walton Beach track and field program if they entered today’s District 2-3A meet thinking ahead.
Coming off last season’s eighthplace finish at state on the boys’ side, Vikings coach Lissette Moller-Fields alluded to the fact that both squads enter today’s meet eager to begin what they hope will be a long run in the state series.
“All the kids are busting at the seams getting ready for the state series,” Moller-Fields said. “You can just really see it.”
Choctawhatchee, Crestview and Niceville will join Fort Walton Beach today at Tallahassee Chiles, while Navarre will compete in the District 1-3A meet Wednesday at Gulf Breeze.
Only the top four finishers in each event advance to regional competition.
     “Whoever is running the best
(today) is going to be the one who wins a lot of these events,” Crestview coach Ernie Martin said. “It’s not going to be easy … It doesn’t matter what time they send in (pre-meet), you still have to shoot the gun and make the run.”
Still, when Choctaw, Crestview, Niceville and Fort Walton Beach converge in Tallahassee, each school will bring a bounty of the state’s top performers in 3A this season.
In the boys’ events, Fort Walton Beach boasts 3A’s No. 1 4x400 relay team, its No. 2 4x800 relay team as well as top 10 individual performers in Matt Bevil (third, 800), Luc Lawrence (sixth, 800) and Deiontrez Mount (second, 110 hurdles).
Mount is also ranked 20th in the 300 hurdles (40.13) while Bevil comes in at 16th in the 400 meter run, just two spots ahead of teamate Kevin Bryant.
Crestview’s Aaron Nelson, ranked 12th in the 100 meter dash, and Donquel Dorsey, ranked 14th in the 400 meter run, headline a boys’ team that turned heads in placing second at the recent County Championships. Jacob Gourlie and Cameron Sanchez have each starred in the distance runs as has Chris Pickett
in the long jump, the 100 meter dash and as part of the Bulldogs’ surging 4x100 relay team.
“We have a motto at Crestview that everything we do, starting in mid-February until the district tournament, is practice,” Martin said.       “Every county meet, every individual workout, everything is practice because we have a one-shot playoff system. You have to go in and run your event and be in the top four at district or you’re out after the first round.”
Niceville’s Charlie Tidwell is ranked second in both the discus and the shot put, while Kody Williams is ranked 15th in the triple jump. Cody Skarupa is ranked seventh in the 800 meter run and sixth in the 300 meter hurdles.
“Our deal is to try to make sure the kids that are supposed to qualify for the regional meet get in that top four,” Eagles coach Sherman Eller said. “We should walk out of there with a good corps of district champions if every-thing goes right.”
Eller’s sentiments were echoed when the discussion switched over to the girls’ events, where Niceville boasts one of the area’s more dynamic
performers
in senior Rachel Klinger. Klinger enters today’s meet ranked second in the 100 meter hurdles, seventh in the 300 meter hurdles and fifth in the high jump. Teammate Emily Sager is ranked fifth in the triple jump.
Choctaw’s Brittany Brown, meanwhile, is also highly ranked in multiple events, coming in at No. 5 in the 100 meter dash, 11th in the long jump and 21st in the 400 meter run.
For the Vikings, Holly Stanton remains one of the state’s premier distance runners, arriving at Chiles ranked third in the 3200 and fifth in the 1600. Ivy Chastain is 14th in the 3200, while Sarah DeVaux is No. 19 in the 800 meter run.
Navarre’s Eugene Robinson, ranked eighth in the triple jump, leads the Raiders’ boys contingent that also features regional hopefuls in TreVon Allen (100 meter dash), Cody Haden (1600, 3200) and Eric Bell (hurdles). On the girls’ side, Navarre features the state’s seventh-ranked pole vaulter in Chelsea Chandler.

CRESTVIEW — If Tuesday’s Okaloosa County Track and Field Championships at Crestview was the exercise in strategy that Lissette Moller-Fields proclaimed, chalk one more up for the Vikings’ coach.
Fort Walton Beach cruised to a second consecutive boys county title, lapping the field with a whopping 147 points. But it was on the girls’ side where a strong start by Choctawhatchee — which led after 10 events — and a resilient effort by defending county champ Niceville that had Moller-Fields and the Vikings’ staff entrenched in a chess-like approach to the final few events.
“We knew the other teams were being very strategic,” Moller-Fields said. “I think today was more about strategically placing people in events.”
Fort Walton Beach’s moves worked just fine as the Vikings’ girls scrapped by Niceville, 111-104, to complete the county sweep.
“Not a bad day at all,” Fort Walton Beach’s Sarah DeVaux, who won two individual events and also ran on the first-place 4x400 relay team, said. “It was probably one of the best.”
Choctaw (81), Crestview (33) and Rocky Bayou Christian (one) rounded out the field on the girls’ side while Crestview, which last year placed fourth, climbed two spots to

finish second on the boys’ side with 84.5 points.
“They’ve come a long way,” Crestview coach Ernie Martin said.
Niceville (69), Choctaw (32.5) and Rocky Bayou Christian (one) completed the scoring on the boys’ side.
For the Fort Walton Beach boys, it was more of the same for the Vikings. Luc Lawrence won the 1600 meter run (4:37) and the 800 meter run (2:03.46) while Matt Bevil finished first in the 400 meter run with a time of 49.87. Sam Ammons captured first in the 3200 meter run, turning in a time of 10:08, after finally heeding the advice of his coaches.
“I was always stubborn and never listened to my coaches and always went up front,” Ammons said. “(Today) I stayed back and drafted a little bit. The last 900 meters or so I took off. I knew it was going to hurt, but

Other individual winners for the Viking boys were Maurice Williams (triple jump, 42-5 1/2), Kevin Bryant (200, 22.49) and Deiontrez Mount (110 hurdles, 15.4). The Vikings also won the 4x800 relay and the 4x400 relay.
Preventing the Vikings from a relay sweep was Crestview’s 4x100 relay team, which weathered a shaky first exchange and slammed the door on the Vikings thanks in large part to a strong anchor leg run by Aaron Nelson.
Nelson also won the 100 meter dash
(10.85). Chris Pickett captured first in the long jump with a height of 22-3.
Niceville received firstplace finishes from Bobby Kressin (high jump, 6-2) and Cody Skarupa (300 hurdles, 40.34) as well as a pair of dominating wins in the discus (162-1) and shot put (49-7 1/2) by Charlie Tidwell.
In the girls’ events, Fort Walton Beach’s win was far from easy.
Holly Stanton (1600 meter run, 5:30; 3200 meter run, 12:04) and DeVaux (400 meter run, 1:03.03; 800 meter run, 2:28.41) helped lead the way with first-place individual finishes as did Morgan McLaughlin, who won the discus with a throw of 103-9. Fort Walton Beach also took two of the three relays, winning the 4x800 and the 4x400. Choctaw,
which received a strong anchor run from Brittany Brown, took first in the 4x100.
It was Brown that helped Choctaw briefly take the lead on Tuesday, winning the long jump (17-7 1/2) and the 100 meter dash (12.46) to help give the Indians a 68-57 lead after 10 events.
Niceville, meanwhile, benefitted from another strong outing from senior Rachael Klinger. Klinger won the high jump (5-7), 100 hurdles (15.25) and the 300 hurdles (48.41).
“We did everything we were supposed to do today with the girls,” Eagles’ coach Sherman Eller said. “We asked them to do a lot and they did.”

Crestview’s Asten Lopez captured first in the 200 meter dash with a time of 26.79.

Beach won all but three races.
It just means we’re continuing to do the best that we possibly can,” Vikings’ runner Luc Lawrence said.
Lawrence, like Bevil, served to illustrate Fort Walton Beach’s depth, winning 400 meter dash (51.24) while also helping the Vikings win both the 4x800 and 4x400 relays. Bevil was also part of the two winning relays. Matt Winkler (pole vault), Maurice Williams (triple jump), Joe Lofton (long jump, 100 meter dash), Deiontrez Mount (110 high hurdles), Jake Dearmon (1600) and Steven Haye (200 meter dash) rounded out the Vikings’ large haul of first-place finishers.
Niceville received first-place finishes from Charlie Tidwell (shot put, discus) and Bobby Kressin (high jump), while Choctaw’s Hakeem Tarpley (800) and Alec Herrera (3200) also won their respective events.

For Herrera, however, it didn’t come without holding off a late surge from one of those aforementioned Vikings. As Herrera neared the final turn of the 3200 he sensed Fort Walton Beach’s Sam Ammons making a late push.
I was tired,” Herrera said. “I just put it all out there. I knew if I let him get me (on the last turn) I wouldn’t be able to get him on the last straightaway.
On the girls’ side, Holly Stanton once again led the way for the Vikings, winning both the 1600 (5:35) and 3200 (12:14.43) races while also helping guide the 4x800 relay team to a first place finish.
I’ve never really been on a team that won anything,” Stanton said. “It’s really neat. I’m not just winning for myself, I’m winning for my team, too. Every time I get a first, I’m getting a lot of points for my team.”
Stanton was not alone as Grace Fuller (pole vault) and Sarah deVaux (800) also captured first-place honors for Fort Walton Beach.
Klinger was joined by Emily Sager (triple jump) to give Niceville a pair of top finishers. Choctaw’s Brittany Brown turned in a stellar showing in winning in the long jump (16-6 ½), 100 meter dash (12.06) and the 400 meter dash (59.96). Jasmine Jones, meanwhile, gave the Indians a second first-place finisher in the shot put (36-5 ½)
Paxton’s Erin Walker continued her dominance in the discus winning with a throw of 128-6.
Fort Walton Beach boys, girls shine as Vikings win at Max Bruner Invitational
boy’s side, it was more of the same as Fort Walton Beach blew away the field with 136 team points for its third-straight win at the annual meet. Niceville (36), Choctawhatchee (58) and Rocky Bayou Christian (3) rounded out the boys’ field.
“It shows the strength of our program now,” Fort Walton Beach’s Matt Bevil said. “(It shows) how much we’ve grown the last few years and how much depth we have. It gives us a lot of confidence going to the rest of the meets knowing that we can spread people out and accomplish a lot.”
Namely, it allowed the Vikings to flex their collective muscle as a Fort Walton Beach boys team or individual placed first in 10 of the 16 events on the day. In the running events alone, Fort Walton

FORT WALTON BEACH – From an individual standpoint, Rachel Klinger had a lot to be thankful for following Saturday’s Max Bruner Invitational.
Aside from setting a school record in the 110 meter hurdles with a time of 14.72, Klinger, a senior on the Niceville track and field team, also placed first in the high jump (5-4), the 300 meter hurdles (48.40) and served as the anchor in the Eagles’ first-place 4x100 meter relay (51.38) despite it being her first time to compete in the event since her
freshman year.
“Overall, it was a good day,” Klinger said.

The only thing keeping a ‘good day’ from perhaps being a great one were those in the red and blue of Fort Walton Beach.
“I feel like we have a strong team, but it’s hard when Fort Walton (Beach) is getting first place all the time.”
Fort Walton Beach took both the boys’ and girls’ crowns at his year’s Max Bruner Invitational, as the girls’ edged out Niceville 124-111 while last year’s champion, host Choctawhatchee, placed third with 77 points. On the

Track and field teams dream big

By TRAVIS DOWNEY

The 2009 track and field campaign had to be considered a large success for Baker coach David Oglesby as the Gators’ program sent several athletes to the Class A state meet, but, as he glances at a list of 2010 returnees, Oglesby believes this is the season the Gators’ program has been building toward.
“This is the year we’ve been waiting
on,” Oglesby said. “It’s the year we’ve been practicing for and building for for the five years I’ve been here. I hate to put that much pressure on myself and everyone else, but this is the (year) I think where everything can come
together.”
Track and field teams across the area
are dreaming just as big as a new season gets underway.
The Fort Walton Beach boys team last year finished eighth at the state meet and returns senior captains Matt Bevil and Luc Lawrence.
Last season, Bevil punctuated a strong junior year by placing second at state in the 800-meter dash while Lawrence finished fifth.
Deiontrez Mount, meanwhile, gave the Vikings three state medalists by earning a fifth-place finish in the 100-meter hurdles.
Still, as the new season inches closer, Fort Walton Beach coach Lisette Moller-Fields said this year’s team enters the new year with a chip on its shoulder after narrowly missing a district title.
“We lost by one point and it was like, ‘Ugh,’ ” Moller-Fields said. “We’re hoping for a district championship. We have a lot of depth this year on the boys’ side that we have not had before. I think this is the year that we will have more go to state than we’ve had the previous three years combined.”
     Choctawhatchee, under the direction
of first-year coach Marshall Sealy, returns state participant Hakeem Tarpley, who finished seventh in the 1600-meter run.
Elsewhere in Class 3A, Navarre returns senior pole vaulter Chelsea Chandler, who last year finished eighth at state.
Niceville will enter the 3A fray this season and despite the losses of Christian Ritacco, Donavan Woodberry and Michael Cooley, the Eagles do return state performers in Cody Skarupa (seventh place, 4x400 relay) and Charlie
Tidwell (enters the season ranked No. 1 in discus) on the boys’ side while Rachel Klinger (11th, high jump) and Emily Sager (seventh, Inside in Track and field capsules triple jump) return to the fold on the girls’ side.
“This has been the most dedicated group I have been around from a track standpoint,” Eagles coach Sherman Eller said.

Then there is Class A, which boasts
surging programs in South Walton, Paxton and Baker, all three of which will look to improve on strong showings at state last season.
Paxton returns a two-time state champion discus thrower in senior Erin Walker while South Walton’s Tiffany Snider, the Class A state champion in girls shot put, also returns.
In all, South Walton returns six state qualifiers on the girls’ side as Snider will be joined by Sam Vandiver, Marissa Dodson, Lauren Morton, Brittany Crittendon and Jessica Harrison to go along with four state performers on its boys’ side in Quinston Morris, Ian Towne, Jacob Leuze and Chris Sanders.
Crittendon finished fourth in the 400 and Harrison placed fifth in the high jump while Morton finished eighth in the triple jump and ninth in the long
jump. Morris finished fourth at state in the boys’ shot put and Sanders placed fifth in the 110 hurdles while Leuze finished 10th in the 1600 and Towne 11th in the pole vault.
With so many experienced athletes returning, Seahawks coach Greg Niemiec said he has noticed a much more focused approach to the season.
“They know they can do well but that
they have to work hard,” Niemiec said.
“I think the discipline and the work ethic are much better this year. We’re seeing
everyone trying to improve (in practice)
rather than just being out there this time.”
With its lineup boasting five state qualifiers from a year ago, Oglesby said his Baker program also opens the new year with a more narrowed focus.
Cassidy Anderson (200, 4x800 relay), Haley Wagner (4x800 relay), Cassie Cooper (4x800 relay), Bethany Chestnut (300, 4x800 relay) and Devin Scott (800) all return to give the Gators perhaps their strongest team in years, according to Oglesby.
“We want people on the (state) podium,” Oglesby said.

Niceville's Tidwell signs with Coastal Carolina
By TRAVIS DOWNEY

Charlie Tidwell was an unsure eighth grader when he first picked up a shot put. New to the sport and unsure of exactly what it entailed, Tidwell proved to be a quick study.
“When I first started, I wasn’t that great at it,” Tidwell recalled. “But the more I worked at it, I saw that I had a chance to be pretty good.”
As it turned out, Tidwell became quite adept at shot put and discus and even the hammer throw while at Niceville. On Friday, he signed scholarship papers to continue the sport at Division-I Coastal Carolina University.
Coastal Carolina, located in Conway, S.C., competes in the Big South Conference where the
Chanticleers track and field program has compiled 12 conference titles, the latest coming last season when the women’s indoor and outdoor teams captured the conference crown.     For Tidwell, who first visited the campus last summer to attend a throwing camp hosted by the Coastal Carolina coaching staff, the decision to sign with the Chants program was two-fold.
“The fact that they have good academics and they have a great program (stood out to me),” said Tidwell, who last season launched the discus a personal-record 164 feet to place third at regionals and qualify for the state meet. “The coaching staff was really great. They made me feel welcome and the atmosphere was really great.”
“He was a natural,” Parker said. “From that point on, he got better. His first year in high school
he threw 130 feet. From that point on, he got better and better each year.”     Niceville track coach Sherman Eller credited Tidwell’s determination and drive as key factors in the senior’s ability to land a D-I scholarship.
“Charlie is a competitor,” Eller said. “He’s going to do well in college just because he has the desire to be successful.”
Shortly after signing his name to scholarship papers, Tidwell thanked the man who first introduced him to the sport to begin with — Willie Parker. Tidwell first met Parker as an eighth grader after the coach asked him to try out for the track team at Emerald Coast Middle School. Perhaps somewhat reluctuantly, Tidwell obliged. The rest, as they say, is history.

FWB girls finish 3rd, boys 4th at XC state finals

From Staff Reports
For a second consecutive season, the Fort Walton Beach cross country program boasts two of the state’s very best.
Fort Walton Beach’s girls followed the lead of senior Holly Stanton, who set a new school record and turned in a National Elite Gold time (18:55) in guiding the Vikings to a third-place finish at the FHSAA Class 3A Finals in Dade City, while its boys’ team placed fourth thanks to a strong run by senior Luc Lawrence.
But unlike last season, which saw both Fort Walton Beach teams finish third in the state, no other 3A program can boast having a top five team in both fields.
“That’s a pretty cool accomplish-ment,” Vikings coach Lissette Moller-Fields said. “We were shooting for the stars and hoping for a state title or runner-up (finish). We didn’t train for anything less than going for the gusto but to finish third and fourth is a great ending to our season.”
“I think it’s a good testament to all the hard work we’ve put in over the last few years,” Lawrence said.
Chiles (40) won the girls side just ahead of Lakewood Ranch (62) and Fort Walton Beach (94). Niceville (342) placed 12th.
Stanton’s school-record time was good for ninth individually while team-mate Iolani Scanlan (19:33) finished
18th. Ivy Chastain (19:52) placed 25th. For Stanton, who was competing in her third straight state meet, the Vikings’ senior came through on her personal goal of bettering last season’s No. 16 finish.
“I was so excited about being able to place ninth and our team being third,” Stanton said. “It was a lot of fun today, I’m so proud of my team.”
Niceville was paced by super fresh-man Marsel Mosley (19:35) who capped an impressive debut season with a 19th-place finish at state.
On the boys’side, the Vikings (152) received another strong run from Luc Lawrence who after finishing 44th a year ago, placed 16th on Saturday.
“I had more of a finishing kick than I had in previous races,” Lawrence said. “It’s a lot better place than I had last year.”
Matt Bevil (16:31) finished 24th for the at the 1-A regional, but Michael Graziani’s eighth-place individual finish at 17:23 will push him into the state meet as an individual. Baker’s John Scott narrowly missed the same honor with a 22nd place finish at 18:46. Dannica Mosher was Freeport’s top girl finisher at 65th.
Rocky Bayou Christian freshman Christy Allen just missed out on her bid to make state as an individual at the 1-A regional, coming in 30th at 22:03.

For four area cross country teams, as well as several local individual athletes, today’s state cross country finals in Dade City has long been viewed as the grand finale all had hoped to take part in.
But having now advanced through district and regional competition to arrive at their sport’s grandest stage, no longer are today’s finals viewed as a dream-like scenario, but instead as one last challenge in need of toppling.
“The key right now is keeping up the intensity,” Niceville coach Sherman Eller said. “You work so hard … This is what counts.”
Fort Walton Beach (boys and girls), Navarre (boys) and Niceville (boys and girls) will send their teams to the Class 3A meet while individuals from Choctawhatchee will also compete in today’s meet.
South Walton’s girls’ team will participate in the 2A meet while Freeport
will send individuals into the fray at today’s 1A meet.
For the Vikings, whose girls finished second at last week’s region meet and whose boys finished third, the excitement pulsating through the entire program was nearing fever pitch just days before the meet.
     “ We ’ r e e x c i t e d , ” Vikings’ coach Lissette Moller-Fields said. “All their hard work has paid off.”
The Vikings enter today’s meet as one of only three schools to boast a boys and girls team inside the top 10 in the state, with Fort Walton Beach currently sitting at No. 4 on both sides. Bishop Kenny is ranked fifth in both boys and girls while Winter Park is second in the state on the girls side and 10th in boys competition.
“That just shows the strength we have on both the boys and girls side,” Moller-Fields said.
Fort Walton Beach’s boys have been paced all year by the duo of Luc Lawrence and Matt Bevil while the girls team has greatly benefited from the addition of transfer Holly Stanton, who
last week at region led all area runners with a sixth-place finish.
Niceville, which finished fourth in the boys race and sixth on the girls side, also received promising efforts at region that Eller hopes will lead to even greater things later today.
Marsel Mosley, who turned in a time of 19:02 at regionals for the third-fastest time for a freshman in 3A, continues her late-season surge while the Eagles boys team answered the call after a less than stellar run at district.
“We went in with a plan and both teams executed that plan, bottom line.” Eller said. “Right now, the mindset is they all feel with the training we’ve done that they can do better.”

Navarre coach Thomas Lintz has the Raiders looking to once again earn a top 10 finish. Last season, Navarre’s boys finished 10th.
“We’ve been in the top 10 the last few years,” Lintz said. “We seem to come up with five pretty good kids every year. It hasn’t been the same group every year, but we seem to have kids come through and run hard enough
to help us get there.”
Robert Mann has led the way for Navarre this year and did so once again last week in finishing ninth at regionals.
Individually, Choctaw’s Hakeem Tarpley will be competing in the 3A meet after finishing 14th a week ago.
In 2A, the South Walton girls team will look to punctuate the season on a positive note. Perhaps aiding the Seahawks is a comfort level with today’s course that coach Greg Niemiec said can only help soothe any feelings of restlessness that may occur moments before the biggest meet of the year.
“This is a course we’ve always done really well on,” Niemiec said. “It’s the fourth time they’ve run it in two years and we tend to have really good times on this course so we’re looking forward to going there again.”
Freeport’s Michael Graziani, after turning in a time of 17:23 to finish eighth at regionals, will compete in today’s 1A meet as an individual. Graziani’s berth into the state finals marked just the third time ever a Freeport boy has qualified for the state meet.

Choctaw, Freeport sending individuals

From Staff Reports
The Fort Walton Beach cross country team picked a good time to have one of its best outings of the year.
Competing at the 1-3A regional in Tallahassee on Saturday, the Vikings qualified both their boys (third, 83 points) and girls (second, 59) teams to the state meet to lead the area on both sides. Both Niceville teams will join them at state, as the boys qualified in fourth with 158 points and the girls finished sixth with 171.

at the 1-A regional, but Michael Graziani’s eighth-place individual finish at 17:23 will push him into the state meet as an individual. Baker’s John Scott narrowly missed the same honor with a 22ndplace finish at 18:46. Dannica Mosher was Freeport’s top girl finisher at 65th.

From Staff Reports
The Fort Walton Beach cross country teams highlighted a strong day from the area contingent at the District 1-3A meet at Osceloa Golf Course in Pensacola.
The gold standard on Saturday was set by the Viking girls, who placed second to champion Tallahassee Chiles (24) with 43 points. Fort Walton Beach’s boys (87) also had the area’s best finish on the boys side, placing third behind champion Tallahassee Leon (59) and Washington (81).
The area will boast a strong group of teams at the regional meet. Along with the Fort Walton Beach teams, both squads from Niceville and Choctaw advanced along with Navarre’s boys.      The top eight teams moved on and Crestview had the toughest luck, as its boys team tied for eighth but lost the tiebreaker and the girls placed ninth.
Fort Walton Beach’s Holly Stanton had the best individual finish on either the boys or girls side by placing third.      The Viking girls had five runners place in the top 15. Following Stanton was Iolani Scanlan (sixth), Sarah DeVaux (ninth), Ivy Chastain (10th) and Brittany Long (15th).
Niceville’s girls (98) placed right behind Fort Walton Beach and were paced by Marsel Mosley, who finished seventh. Laura Nelson (11th) and
Abigail McCool (19th) also cracked the top 20.

Fort Walton Beach cross country teams dethrone Niceville, take county titles

NICK TOMECEK |DailyNews Boys cross country runners leave the starting line on Saturday during a six-team meet.
they’re really good this year, boys and girls,” Eller said.
The boys’ lead pack consisted of Fort Walton Beach’s Luc Lawrence and Matt Bevil as well as Crestview’s Jacob Gourlie. Lawrence led for most of the race but Bevil, the 2009 Daily News boys track athlete of the year, turned on the jets over the final mile to leg out the overall win at 16:29. Gourlie finished hot on his heels at 16:32 and Lawrence crossed a second later for third.
“We ran well as a team for about the first two miles and then from there it was a good mile race back, that’s where most of the stuff happened,” Bevil said. “But the times are decent, so it’s good placement for the state series coming up.”
The Vikings also placed the top two runners on the girls side, as Holly Stanton crossed first at 19:33 and Iolani Scanlan finished second at 19:35. Niceville had the next two in Laura Nelson (19:41) and freshman Marsel Mosley (19:52).
“ We w a r m e d u p together with some of the teams, but that doesn’t change the competition level when they’re finishing or kicking in, they’re still competing,” Vikings coach Jeff Fields said.
There were five team finishers on the boys side and four for the girls. Bolstered by Gourlie’s mammoth day, Crestview finished third for the boys (68) and came in third on the girls side (79) as well with Lauren Day the top finisher at No. 9 overall.
Choctawhatchee came in fourth in boys (135) and girls (96), while the Baker boys finished fifth with a 143.

FORT WALTON BEACH — The Niceville cross country team’s reign atop the county heap is no more.
Fort Walton Beach carried over scorching seasons on the boys and girls sides to snatch away the Okaloosa County titles from Niceville in the six-team county meet on Saturday at
Timberlake. The Eagles, who finished second in both, had won the girls title six straight years and took the boys title in the last two.
“We knew coming in that we had a chance of being county champs on the girls and boys side, it was just a matter of them running the way that they needed to run,” Vikings coach Lissette Moller-Fields said.
      The Vikings have been running
strong all year, and Saturday was an extension of that area dominance. The Vikings girls and boys turned in twin 21s to beat out Niceville, which scored a 55 on the girls side and a 43 on the boys side.
Niceville coach Sherman Eller said the Vikings were just too strong to beat this year, especially the girls team, which is ranked No. 2 in the state.

A heat index putting temperatures close to the 100 degree mark did little to stop dedicated teams from participating in the Bay Invitational Sept 26th, 2009. 14 Boys teams and 17 girls teams showed up displaying eagerness and fortitude. There seemed to be a true sense of teamwork throughout the entire day starting with the teams and ending with meet Director Tim Wanamaker, coach of 10 years for Bay High School's Cross Country teams.

Coach Wanamaker had this to say about the meet, "we put the announcement out on July 1st that we would be hosting the event. It took a lot of cooperation from parents, students and other volunteers. Everyone stepped up to the plate and did whatever was needed."
Among the teams in attendance was Altha Public High School from Altha, Florida, in their first year having a Cross Country team and the second meet of the season. Their young team ranging from 6th - 12th grades ended the day with the girls varsity finishing 11th and the boys taking 17th. When asked about the team's performance, Coach John Sewell said, "they are coming along. Our team has a lot of motivation and I think they are doing really well."

Fort Walton Beach High School had a great day, seizing the win in both the
girls and boys varsity races. Capturing an early lead, the girls team stuck together, driving each other throughout the race. They took the top 5 places, giving the team a perfect score of 15 points. Iolani Scanlan finished 1st with a time of 20:02. Iolani stated the only real challenge was the heat and the last hill near the finish. She said, "The team just kept pushing each other." Right behind her was Holly Stanton (20:08), Sarah deVaux (20:21), Ivy Chastain (20:39), and Brittany Long (20:58). Niceville varsity girls placed second having 87 points with Washington High School securing a close 3rd place with 88 points.

Finishing with a 1st place time of 16:48, Luc Lawrence of Fort Walton Beach High School grabbed the lead from the start of the boys varsity race and led the way as he ran a 5:10 first mile, and didn't consider the heat to be a big deal. Luc stated, "it's a harder course with all the hills. My goal was to stay in the lead against everyone else." The Fort Walton Beach varsity boys took 1st place with a score of 50 points. Chris Douglas (17:10) and Matt Bevel (17:11) were 7th and 8th. Alex Godfrey (17:34) and Brian Staton (17:41), who is new to the team this year, came in 16th and 18th giving the team what they needed for the win. Niceville High School's boys team also placed second
with 79 points and Washington High School was 3rd with 103 points.

Fort Walton Beach High School Coaches Lissette Moller-Fields and Jeff Fields were definitely excited about their teams' accomplishments. "The girls (varsity) team was amazing, "Coach Fields stated. " The freshmen really stepped up to the plate, including Brittany (Long) who gave us our perfect score. The boys (varsity) performed really well, even minus one of our top 5. The JV teams were also impressive, cutting times by as much as a minute. Coach Moller-Fields commented about next week's race saying, "I think we are in great shape for next week's FLRunners Meet and think our girls could place in the top 3 and the boys in the top 5."

The JV teams unquestionably showed some awesome aptitude. Kathryn Russell from Fort Walton Beach High School was the JV girls winner, running a time of 22:18. Kathryn said of her teammates, "the team did really well. Everyone stuck together. It was a good course, I really felt like I knew what I was doing." And they did indeed stick together. Kathryn was followed across the finish by her fellow teammates, Briana Degennaro (22:49), Sierra Wanner (23:06), and Jessie Niemiec (23:42). Christine Poole of
Godby High School placed 5th running a time of 25:15.

In the boys JV race, Niceville High School's Danny Cooper took the win with a time of 18:29. His older brother, Michael, placed 9th in the boys varsity race. "It was a smooth course," Danny commented about the race. Coach Sherman Eller stated that Danny did excellent considering he was recovering from being sick just two weeks ago. "He's on track for a PR." Not far behind Danny was Tim Bulger (18:38) and Zach Smith (18:44) from Fort Walton Beach High School who placed 2nd and 3rd with Washington High School's Andre Bordelon (18:57) close behind in 4th.

The top 10 finishers from each race were awarded ribbons. The winning varsity teams were awarded a trophy.

For those interested in the 3A Boys state battle, #1 ranked Washington High School and #2 ranked Fort Walton Beach High School have started the fight. Last week's race at the Washington Wildcat Invitational, Washington High School placed first with 44 points, beating out Fort Walton Beach's second place with 54 points. This week, the tides turned and Fort Walton Beach placed 1st with 50 points beating Washington who came in 3rd with 103 points.

Cross country teams brace for another run at title
By TRAVIS DOWNEY
Northwest Florida Daily News 315-4476 | travisd@nwfdailynews.com
Lissette Moller-Fields was already set to return the bulk of her roster from a boys’ and girls’ cross country team that each finished the season No. 3 in Class 3A.
So when former Rocky Bayou Christian standout Holly Stanton, who placed 16th at the Class 1-A state meet a year ago, transferred to Fort Walton Beach, it truly was a case of the rich getting richer. Not that Moller-Fields was complaining.
“That just gives us more depth,” Moller-Fields said. “It makes our top five stronger.”
It’s a Vikings’ top five that returns all but one — Erin Gallagher — for the 2009 season, which gets underway statewide this week. Briana DeGennaro, Iolani Scanlan, Sarah de Vaux, Kathryn Russell, Elizabeth Gallagher and Melissa Radford, each of whom competed at state a year ago, return to
the fold for the Vikings.     With Stanton now in the mix, Moller-Fields is hopeful the Vikings can improve on last year’s finish as well as their preseason ranking of No. 3.
“When we look back and compare what our training was last year and compare it to this year, they’re stronger already,” Moller-Fields said. “If they ended up third at state (last year), it’s really feasible that they will end up in the top three at state again.”
That sentiment spreads to the boys’ side of the equation for Fort Walton Beach, where Matt Bevil, Luc Lawrence, Sam Ammons, Jake Dearmon and Chris Douglas return from the Vikings’ thirdplace team at state last year.
Niceville will look to make a big splash after moving from 4A to 3A. Niceville’s boys placed fifth and the girls ninth at the 4A meet last season. The Eagle boys are searching for a third straight county championship, and the girls are gunning for their seventh straight title.
Niceville coach Sherman Eller likes the early showings of a boys’ team that returns Michael Cooper, Robert Burnett, Cody Skarupa, Patrick Lacombe and Cullen Fralix.
“I feel like we could be a strong team this year,” Eller said. “The spread between No. 1 and No. 7 should be around 30 seconds, which is huge. We’re not going to have that speedster we had in Christian (Ritacco), that No. 1 guy, but we’re going to have a good team that, hopefully, we can move up together and be able to repeat at least what we did last year.”
Niceville’s girls also return nearly intact from a year ago. Laura Nelson, Abigail McCool, Lauren Eschbach, Casey Luzius, Taylor Adams and Kristin Denison are all back.

Navarre, which finished 10th (boys) and 23rd (girls) at the 3A state meet last year, doesn’t return a ton of athletes, but still should vie for another strong postseason finish thanks to the presence of Robert Mann, Callen Nation and Seth Nydam in its top five.
Also returning in 3A is Choctaw-hatchee standout Hakeem Tarpley, who finished 30th at state last year as an individual, and Crestview’s Lauren Day, who earned a 20th place finish at state and boasted the fastest time by an area girl in 3A.
South Walton’s Jacob Leuze returns after finishing 52nd at the 1-A state meet as a freshman.
The Seahawks, who moved to 2A, also boast one of the area’s premier girls’ teams. After placing 12th last year at the girls’ state meet, South Walton coach Greg Niemiec’s roster returns four of its top runners from last season in Julie Williamson, Jessie Taylor, Allysa Bump and Jessica Harrison.
“I think our girls will be there again hopefully competing for a spot in state,” Niemiec said. “One thing that makes it tougher for us is last year we were in 1-A, now we’re in 2A. But I think the girls will be really strong.”
